When you cue class participants, the words you use can have a major impact on how they execute the movement. Janice Jaicks discusses the example of using the word “kicking” and how it can create varying degrees of outcomes.

What is cueing?

Cueing in group exercise refers to the verbal and physical prompts instructors use to guide participants through a workout. This technique involves clear instructions about movement patterns, timing, and form to ensure exercises are performed safely and effectively. Cueing can be verbal, like providing counts, specific directions, or visual, where instructors demonstrate the movements. It helps participants understand what to expect and encourages correct execution, which is crucial in group settings where individual attention is limited. Effective cueing fosters a cohesive class environment, promotes motivation, and enhances participant engagement and performance.

Cueing an Exercise in the Water

Cueing exercises in the pool differs significantly from doing so in a gym setting due to the unique environment and the properties of water. In the pool, sound travels differently, and water splashing can mask verbal cues. Therefore, instructors often rely more on visual demonstrations and clear body movements to guide participants. For instance, showing a specific arm stroke or foot movement can help swimmers understand the exercise better than verbal instructions alone.

Additionally, water’s buoyancy alters the way exercises are perceived and executed. Cueing often involves emphasizing proper alignment and resistance, as the water provides a different level of support and challenge than gym equipment. Instructors must also account for individual skill levels and comfort in the water, making adjustments on the fly to ensure safety and effectiveness. Overall, pool cueing requires adaptability and a focus on visual communication to enhance participants’ understanding and performance.
