The skater is a great exercise to practice balance, train hip deceleration and change of direction. Depending on the goal, the skater can be utilized with athletes or the general population.
Have the client start in an athletic stance holding the ViPR or steel mace on one side of the body. Chop down and across the body landing with one foot behind. We start our clients placing a foot behind so they can emphasize loading the hip and starting off in a balanced position. From there the exercise can be progressed to a hop or more explosive lateral jump.
To increase the difficulty, have your client increase the weight of the ViPR or steel mace. With the steel mace, decreasing the hand width can also increase the training stimulus.
